Just One Little Thing

It's always the little things that make the biggest difference

In the world of data management, consistency is key. Have you heard of GIGO (garbage in/garbage out)? It's a fundamental concept: if your data input is inconsistent, you'll end up with unreliable output.

If I could give one piece of advice to new businesses (and some existing ones) to ensure future success, it would be to maintain consistency in your data entry practices. For instance, always inputting "Widget A" the same way across all systems and transactions is essential. Avoid variations like "A Widget" or abbreviations to guarantee accurate and reliable data analysis in the long run.

Consistent data entry enables you to effectively track metrics like return on investment (ROI) for Widget A. By linking data across systems with uniform entries, you can easily identify trends, assess profitability, and monitor order volumes. On the contrary, using different names for the same product complicates data analysis and undermines confidence in your insights.

To maintain data consistency, consider implementing strategies such as using a master sheet for copy/pasting, creating dropdown menus, or utilizing scanning codes for automated entry. These simple yet effective methods ensure that you have high-quality data at your disposal as your business expands.
